intertwined

I have a lot I want to express right now. It is all swirling inside my head.  Thankfully, it is a warm, happy bunch of swirls.  Right now, I am not sure whether the topic is pets,  loss, life, growing older, or relationships.  I think the topic is companionship and maybe I will proceed with that in mind.

Oddly, these thoughts seem to have been precipitated by a strange little mixed breed dog that has been in my life for just under two weeks.

Enter Spanky.  Spanky came to me after the sudden, unexpected loss of my dear dog, Bravo.  When I lost Bravo, my heart imploded.   The loss of my gentle, loyal friend of 9 1/2 years was genuinely heartbreaking.  Those who have lost a friend know exactly what I mean.

Out of the Darkness

There are times in a person's life that things seem hopeless.  There are times of great sadness.  I have been through one of these times most recently after the loss of my beloved companion of 9 1/2 years, Bravo.

I forgot what it was like to be without the steady companionship of a loyal dog.  I was reminded in a very harsh way on October 9th when a sudden, unexpected health issue took Bravo away from me.  In the days that followed, I developed a terrible cough, fever, and cold.  The following weeks felt like a dream.  I was existing, that is all.

One day, as I was beginning to recover from the illness, my husband asked me if I would ever have another dog.  I answered by saying that I really didn't need one.   To which, he said to me, "I disagree."  We talked a while and I began to look around.

As much as I love big dogs (I have always had large dogs), I thought about looking at little dogs.  The first little guy I saw that caught my eye on Petfinder.com, was a splashy little black and white poodle mix.  So, I thought, I will apply for this little dog and just go have a look at him.

The story that brought me together with this little guy is long and interesting and filled with what I believe to be some sort of destiny.

He's here.
He's a good dog.
He has big paws to fill.
I hope that Bravo's spirit has found a way to be here in this little dog.

Monday Mourning

Rest in peace, my good, old dog, Bravo.
I'm sorry how things ended up after all that we have been through.
There is a place inside my heart where you will always live, along with all the other friends I have lost.
You were a loyal, gentle, joyful soul. You brought so much companionship and happiness to my life.  You really did mean the world to me. Thank you.
I miss you, I will miss relying on your company.  I will always remember my poozie dog. I hope that somehow you and Ursa are reunited.

Here's a poem that Joe wrote over 9 years ago when you were a puppy and just joined our household:

                             Ode to a Poodle

You are a black shot of happiness

If I’m depressed, you are there with a wagging tail.

Your black fur so plush and curly as if it were the softest

                      of fine velvet fabrics.

With your deep brown eyes the color of a freshly tilled field.

Your brown eyes always full of joy.

Run free

Surfacing!

Surfacing.

What do I mean by that?  I liken my current situation to coming to the surface of the water after being underneath for a very long time.  Not just underneath the water, but immersed in very murky, cloudy water (kind of like my pool the last couple of years....).  I have been weighed down and just floundering for years.  I am now trying to streamline and shed some of the should-do obligations to only the things I want to do.

Lately, I have had no uninterrupted free time. Any space was always filled with favors for others.  While I like to help, and I like to make my friends and family happy, I have realized there is a line between been relied upon and being taken advantage of.  I want time for my family and for myself, so I have been shedding the excess obligations in order to be able to live the life I want.

I found this quote on Brainy Quotes, and it sums things up nicely:

And so, now, that is what I am in the process of doing.  I am resigning with a good grace all the things that I am not to make way for the next stage of my life.  Some will be disappointed, and that is ok, they will make do.  As for me, it is time to live a life without so many hectic and frantic times.  To visit friends, to take care of my own. To live and love without distraction.  These are the things I am looking forward to.

Dancing at Dairy Queen

Birthday week.   sigh.  It's easy to feel melancholy about aging.  However, really, it beats the alternative, doesn't it?

With that in mind, and after a battle royale with my youngest regarding some lies I have been hearing from him, I decided that a little birthday stop for a treat at DQ might just be in order.

I stopped and asked the drive up screen if by chance the banana cream pie blizzard was available. The voice on the other end sounded very happy and, from what I could tell, yes, that particular blizzard was available.  At least I think that is what I heard.  The sound cut out about every two words or so.....
As I drove ahead, I wondered how much it would cost, as that part of the voice's speech was obscured by static.

Anyway, I got to the drive up window and looked inside.  There was an incredibly perky girl whipping up a DQ specialty.  She was busting out some very good dance moves to some music that she heard in the store.  Her long pony tail was bouncing up and down.  To my surprise, that was my blizzard she was creating!  As she brought it to the window, she was smiling from ear-to-ear.  She gave me the blizzard and I asked if DQ employees could accept tips.  I gave her a tip and told her that she was having lots of fun and that I hoped her day continued that way.  She said thank you and that the music was good, so she couldn't help but dance.

As she shut the window and turned away, I heard her exclaim to her co workers "I JUST GOT A TIP"!  Well, you deserved it, happy DQ girl.  I hope all your teen aged days are as happy and carefree as you looked that day.  I want to borrow some of your attitude and I vow to try.

By the way, it was the MOST delicious banana cream pie blizzard I have ever had!  :)
